The Road to a National Final

FAST Running - Junior Nationals 2026 - Bree Madigan Wong - medalist

Reaching a National Final is one of the most significant achievements available to a developing athlete.

It means performing consistently enough throughout a season to earn a place among the best athletes in Australia.

It means handling pressure, expectations, travel, qualification standards, and competition environments that are very different from local meets.

National finalists are not defined by one performance.

They are defined by the accumulation of hundreds of performances and decisions that came before it.

At FAST Running, national finalists already exist throughout the squad.

Some are current finalists.

Others have walked the journey in previous seasons.

They all started in the same place:

With a goal.

For younger athletes watching from the side of the track today, a National Final may feel a long way away.

That is perfectly normal.

Every finalist once felt exactly the same.

The important thing is not how far away the goal appears.

The important thing is taking the next step toward it.
