Sunday’s session took a step up Canberra Sprint Coach, August 6, 2024August 27, 2024 The eager 400m athletes in FAST Running’s squad took on the mighty hill repeat session at Lake Burley Griffin on Sunday. Master’s specialist Kos, State Representative Tom, U20 athletes Vish and Mathias, and the latest member of FAST Females, Tearia, tore into the hardest 400 session of the season so far, which was designed to push the body’s limits and improve both speed and endurance. Sunday’s training featured low recovery periods to help the athletes adapt to the intense effort required during a 400m race. The short recovery times mimic the high-intensity nature of the event, improving the runner’s ability to sustain speed and manage fatigue. In 400m training, runners often do intervals with minimal rest to develop speed endurance. This means performing repeat hill sprints at or near race pace with short breaks to build the ability to maintain high speeds despite growing fatigue. Minimal recovery helps improve the body’s ability to clear lactic acid, which accumulates during intense efforts. By training with short recovery periods, athletes can enhance their lactate threshold and improve performance in the latter stages of the race. Training with low recovery periods can also help athletes build mental resilience. Managing discomfort and maintaining focus despite fatigue is crucial for a 400m runner. If you’d like to get more information on 400m training or you are looking for a group to run with, contact Canberra Sprint Coach, Steve Dodt, for more details.
