Since starting to train in July last year, Blake Smith has had nothing short of an outstanding season with FAST Kids. His dedication and commitment to improvement have been evident across every event he’s competed in. From sprints to jumps to hurdles, Blake has continuously pushed himself to new heights, recording personal bests in the long jump, high jump, 70m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 60m hurdles.
One of Blake’s most impressive achievements came in the 400m, where he shaved an incredible three seconds off his personal best, earning him the fastest time in the ACT for his age this season. His hard work paid off in championship performances as well, claiming gold in the 60m hurdles and silver in the 800m at the Capital Athletics Underage Championships in February.
Now, with the school cross country season underway, Blake and his fellow FAST Kids are shifting gears, using their sprint speed to develop endurance for the longer distances. But there’s no slowing down for Blake—he’s already setting his sights on one of the biggest events of the year: the Australian Primary Schools Athletics Championships in December.
With Canberra playing host to the national championships, Blake and his FAST Kids teammates are preparing to bring their best to the track. With months of training ahead, they’re determined to show the rest of Australia what Canberra’s young athletes are capable of.
The FAST Kids program continues to help young athletes like Blake develop their speed, confidence, and love for athletics. With a season of achievements behind him and new goals ahead, there’s no doubt Blake will keep striving for running excellence!
