Matt van de Lugt: Redefining Age, One Fast Step at a Time

FAST Running - Matt - Profile

At 64 years old, Matt van de Lugt is proving that speed has no age limit. Recently, Matt lined up for a 200m trial alongside his younger FAST Track teammates—and in 28 seconds flat, he showed everyone why he’s anything but your typical Masters athlete. With an explosive start and powerful acceleration, Matt looked right at home among sprinters decades younger than him.

Matt’s journey into sprinting is nothing short of inspiring. Having transitioned from the FAST & Active program into FAST Track, he’s following a similar training pathway to squadmates like Rose and Tearia, refining his technique, building speed, and pushing his limits. FAST Track is designed for athletes 12 years and older, aiming to take their performance to the next level—whether in sprints, hurdles, jumps, middle distance, or multi-events. Matt’s rapid improvement shows that age is no barrier to training at an elite level.

To put things into perspective, Matt’s 200m time would have been fast enough to make the final at the Australian Masters Championships—in a sport he’s only been training for a year! With his sights now set on the Australian Masters Games in Canberra (October 2025), he’ll be joining his fellow FAST Running teammates Kos, David, Peter, Florence, Marijke, and Joanne for what promises to be an exciting debut on the Masters stage.

Speed. Strength. Determination. Matt is proving that no matter your age, you can always chase new goals—one fast step at a time.
