Building Running Excellence – One Leg at a Time

FAST Running - FAST & Furious

At FAST Running, running excellence isn’t just about the track—it’s about the work done off it too.

That’s why our squad has been diving into single-leg exercises during our strength and mobility sessions. These targeted movements are more than just a gym trend—they’re a key ingredient in helping our athletes run faster, more efficiently, and with fewer injuries.

Why single-leg work? Running is, after all, a single-leg activity. With every stride, athletes are absorbing force, generating power, and stabilising through one leg at a time. Training this way helps us mimic real running mechanics, improve balance, control, and coordination, and strengthen the muscles that matter most—hips, glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves.

From single-leg RDLs and step-ups to split squats and balance drills, these exercises are tailored to match each athlete’s level and needs. They don’t just build strength—they enhance joint stability, address imbalances, and improve mobility, especially around the knees, hips, and ankles.

We believe that variety in training keeps the body adapting and the mind engaged. By regularly mixing in these focused sessions, athletes stay fresh, challenged, and motivated—while also reducing the repetitive stress that can come from only running.

Just as important is the connection we build between the track and the gym. Our strength and mobility sessions are not standalone—they’re intentionally designed to complement the demands of our sprint sessions. The goal? More powerful strides, better posture, stronger arm drive, and ultimately, faster, safer, more efficient running.

For our squad, reaching new PBs starts long before the starting blocks. It begins with smart training, science-backed movement, and a belief that doing the little things right—like building strength one leg at a time—adds up to big results on race day.
