Few athletes embody the spirit of FAST Running quite like Mathias Lill. Affectionately known as “The Ranga That Runs,” Mathias has become one of the most respected figures in the squad, not just for his performances on the track, but for his leadership, resilience, and dedication to the next generation of athletes.
A Standout Season – A Testament to Hard Work
At the Capital Athletics Underage Championships, Mathias delivered his best 100m (11.83s) and 200m (24.28s) performances, securing 6th and 5th place finishes against a highly competitive field. These results were more than just personal bests—they were proof of his remarkable comeback after a devastating injury in February 2024, when a Triple Jump mishap left him with a torn hamstring and MCL, sidelining him for eight weeks.
For many, such a setback would have been insurmountable. But Mathias refused to let injury define his season. With relentless determination and commitment, he rebuilt his speed, strength, and stamina, and is now in the best shape of his young career.
Beyond the Track – A Leader in Coaching
Mathias isn’t just a talented sprinter—he’s a pillar of the FAST Running coaching team. As Coaching Coordinator for FAST Kids, he plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the program. From ensuring coaches are accredited and following the FAST Running pathway to providing mentorship and feedback, Mathias is one of the key reasons why the FAST Kids program has thrived.
For two seasons, Mathias has also been one of the most requested coaches at the Accelerate School Holiday clinics, where his energy, knowledge, and ability to connect with young athletes have made him a standout mentor. His contributions go far beyond technical coaching—he brings an infectious enthusiasm and leadership that has strengthened the culture and camaraderie of the squad.
Head Coach Steve Dodt: “Mathias is an absolute asset to FAST Running. His impact on both the track and our coaching program is immeasurable. The squad wouldn’t be the same without him.”
What’s Next? A New Challenge on the Horizon
While Mathias has proven himself in the 100m, 200m, and Long Jump, he is not one to back down from a challenge. This winter, he’s setting his sights on the 400m, an event that will test his endurance, strength, and racing strategy as he gears up for All Schools later this year.
With his work ethic, resilience, and leadership, there’s no doubt that Mathias will continue to inspire those around him—whether he’s racing down the track or coaching the next wave of FAST athletes.
