Where It Starts Matters

FAST Running - FAST Start

On Sunday morning, a small group of athletes took to the track.

Three athletes. Five years old.

Under the guidance of Coach Daisy, they worked through a session that, on the surface, looked simple.

But like everything at FAST Running, it was anything but random.

Starting With the Right Foundations

Before any running began, the focus was clear.

Stiff ankle work.
Isolated movement drills.
Posture and coordination.

At this age, athletes are not being pushed for performance.

They are being taught how to move.

How to hold positions.
How to interact with the ground.
How to build rhythm and control.

These are the foundations that underpin all future speed.

Small Group, High Attention

With just three athletes in the session, every movement was seen.

Every drill had purpose.
Every cue had meaning.

This level of attention allows young athletes to:

  • Learn quickly
  • Build confidence
  • Develop correct habits from the start

Because once habits are formed, they are much harder to change later.

From Drill to Movement

The session progressed from isolated work into running.

Off the bend.

Applying what had been introduced in a controlled way.

Not chasing speed.
Not chasing outcomes.

Simply connecting movement to action.

This is where learning begins to transfer.

Coaching That Looks Ahead

FAST Start is not about filling time.

It is about building athletes from the very beginning.

The same principles that underpin high-performance sprinting are introduced here:

  • Posture
  • Ground contact
  • Rhythm
  • Control

Scaled appropriately. Delivered simply.

But always with intent.

Setting the Standard Early

There is a common belief that young athletes should just “run and play” and structure can come later.

At FAST, we take a different view.

Play remains important.
Enjoyment is essential.

But quality matters from the start.

Because when athletes learn to move well early, everything that follows becomes easier.

Athlete First, From Day One

At five years old, the goal is not performance.

It is development.

Creating a positive experience.
Building confidence.
Establishing good movement habits.

Everything else comes later.

At FAST Running, we don’t wait to introduce standards.

We scale them.

From five-year-olds on a Sunday morning…

To athletes competing on the national stage.

Because where it starts matters.
