Performance is never one thing. Last night’s FAST Performance discussion explored how the many pieces of athletic success fit together.
Last night, members of FAST Performance gathered both in person at FAST HQ and online via Google Meets for an interactive discussion titled Putting It All Together.
The purpose of the evening was simple:
What actually goes into producing the best possible performance?
Athletes often see the race result.
They see the personal best.
They see the medal.
What they don’t always see are the dozens of interconnected pieces that sit behind every successful performance.
To explore this, the group worked through a FAST Running jigsaw puzzle, with each piece representing an important component of athletic development and performance.
Athletes and parents were invited to discuss what each piece meant to them, how it contributed to performance, and where they felt it sat within their own journey.
The discussion quickly became far more than a presentation.
Athletes shared experiences.
Parents contributed perspectives.
Others listened, reflected, challenged ideas, and added their own insights.
The evening was facilitated by Head Coach Steve Dodt and supported by Marijke Welvaert, former Australian Institute of Sport High Performance Statistician, helping connect practical experience with evidence-based performance thinking.
What became clear throughout the evening was that high performance is never built on a single factor.
- Speed matters.
- Strength matters.
- Recovery matters.
- Sleep matters.
- Nutrition matters.
- Mindset matters.
- Communication matters.
- Consistency matters.
The challenge for athletes is learning how those pieces fit together and understanding which pieces may currently require the greatest attention.
One of the most encouraging outcomes was the willingness of athletes to take ownership of their own development.
Many left the session identifying specific areas they would like to improve individually before returning to future discussions to share what they have learned.
That willingness to learn, apply, reflect, and share is a hallmark of the FAST Running culture.
The evening concluded with unanimous feedback that sessions like this should continue, providing athletes and families with further opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow together.
At FAST Running, we believe Running Excellence extends well beyond the track.
Sometimes the most important performance gains begin around a table, with a conversation, a question, and a willingness to learn.
