From the Australian Alps to the 400m: Julien’s Next Challenge

FASST Running - Julien - Profile

Some athletes are shaped by their environment long before they step onto the track.

For Julien, that environment was the Australian Alps.

“Athletes who grow up in the mountains learn early that progress comes one climb at a time.”

Growing up among steep climbs, cold mornings and unpredictable weather teaches a particular mindset — patience, resilience and the ability to stay composed when conditions are tough. Those same qualities translate naturally to one of athletics’ most demanding events: the 400 metres.

Julien has been training for the event with FAST Running for just over five months, and in that short time he has already shown the qualities needed to succeed.

The 400m is not simply about speed. It is about managing discomfort, staying disciplined through training, and learning to compete when fatigue begins to take over. Julien has approached that challenge with quiet determination.

A natural competitor, Julien has long embraced physical challenge. Whether on the soccer field or the ski slopes, he has always been drawn to environments where effort and persistence are rewarded.

That competitive instinct is now being channelled into his development as a 400m athlete.

Over the past few months Julien has been a regular presence at FAST training sessions, steadily building the speed, rhythm and endurance required for the event. Recent performances across sprint sessions and competition opportunities have shown clear progress as he adapts to the demands of one of track and field’s most tactical races.

In recent training sessions Julien has already shown promising long-sprint capability, including strong flying sprint work and competitive efforts in FAST sprint sessions as he adapts to the rhythm and demands of the 400 metres.

What stands out most is his mindset.

Julien understands that improvement takes time. He embraces the hard sessions, the rain, and the uncomfortable moments that come with developing as a long sprint athlete.

And already he has his sights set on the next challenge.

With the season building toward September and the Australian All Schools Championships, Julien is working toward achieving a qualifying performance — an early milestone in what promises to be an exciting athletics journey.

At FAST Running we believe great performances begin with the right environment and the right mindset.

Julien brings both.

And sometimes, athletes who grow up in the mountains are already prepared for the climb ahead.
