Key to speed is better form Canberra Sprint Coach, January 17, 2024February 7, 2024 FAST for Sport footy player, Cody Crabb has been mastering the technique necessary for better top end speed. His sessions with Canberra Sprint Coach, Steve Dodt, see Cody performing speed drills that isolate his respective body parts in order to focus on improving his posture and balance. Cody has recently started running over wickets, a running drill using cones placed at increasing interval. The focus is max velocity, emphasizing what happens between the hurdles (stepping down) rather than over the hurdles. Any athlete who hasn’t been formally taught running. tends to not have as exaggerated of a forward lean, therefore easily losing their front-side mechanics, and easy to fall into over striding and heel-striking. Wickets encourage Cody to decrease ground contact time, boost footspeed, and improve front-side mechanics, like his knee lifting up and in front of him, not just hanging out below his hips and behind him. Cody has improved significantly already with his form steadily improving and his sprint form allowing him to accelerate and hold top end speed for longer now. As the football season begins after summer, Cody will be well prepared to run harder and play longer, whilst avoiding injury and improving recovery time.
