Matilda’s Journey: March to December — A Story of Courage, Curiosity and Joy

FAST Running - Matilda

At FAST Running, we don’t measure success by results alone.
We measure it by growth, curiosity, resilience — and the courage to try something new.

Matilda’s journey from March to December this year is a perfect example of that philosophy in action.

Still only 12 years old, Matilda joined our environment with an open mind, a big smile, and a spark that quickly made her a favourite within the group. What followed over the course of the year was not just improvement on paper, but the kind of personal growth that defines a true athlete journey.

From First Steps to Big Milestones

In March, Matilda completed her first 5km run in 28 minutes. By December, that time had dropped to 25 minutes — a reflection of consistent effort, belief, and a growing love for running rather than any rushed focus on outcomes.

Along the way, Matilda embraced new challenges with enthusiasm:

  • Her first competitive 800m at the ACT Championships
  • Her first-ever 10km run, stepping confidently into longer distances
  • Learning how to train, recover, and race within a supportive team environment

Each milestone was met with excitement rather than pressure — exactly how junior development should look.

More Than Times on a Clock

What truly stood out about Matilda wasn’t just her progression, but the energy she brought with her. Her spunk, laughter, and willingness to have a go lifted those around her. She reminded everyone — coaches and athletes alike — that joy and performance are not opposites. They grow best together.

At FAST Running, we believe the early years should be about explorationconfidence, and connection. Matilda embodied that belief every step of the way.

A New Chapter Ahead

As Matilda prepares to move to North Queensland, we do so with immense pride. While her geography may change, her place in the FAST Running story does not.

This isn’t a farewell — it’s the beginning of a new chapter.

We’ll continue to follow her journey, celebrate her milestones, and cheer her on as she grows not only as a distance runner, but as a young person learning what she’s capable of.

This Is What Running Excellence Looks Like

Running excellence isn’t about peaking early.
It’s about building a foundation that lasts.

Matilda’s journey reminds us why we do what we do — to create environments where young athletes feel safe to dream, brave enough to try, and supported every step of the way.

We can’t wait to see where the road takes her next.
