In late October, FAST Running Head Coach Steve Dodt spent an evening surrounded by papers, frameworks, and notes — a quiet study moment captured in black and white. It wasn’t preparation for a competition, but for something equally important: the professionalisation of coaching practice.
That period marked a deep dive into the principles that underpin modern sport — integrity, governance, fairness, and athlete protection. What began as a personal development exercise has since become a blueprint for how FAST Running continues to evolve: building not just faster athletes, but a stronger, more ethical sporting environment.
“When we talk about ‘Athletes First,’ it’s not just about their performance — it’s about how we manage their pathway, protect their wellbeing, and build trust,” Steve says.
Through this professionalisation process, Steve has worked to embed clearer structures and higher standards across the FAST ecosystem:
- Transparent Communication: Creating systems where athletes, parents, and allied partners all understand the intent behind training and decision-making.
- Athlete Advocacy: Ensuring every athlete feels heard, respected, and supported, both in success and in setback.
- Coach Development: Guiding emerging coaches through ethical practice, communication strategies, and evidence-based performance planning.

“Professionalisation isn’t paperwork,” Steve adds. “It’s people work — building clarity, confidence, and consistency around what excellence looks like.”
