Hitting the track via the gym Canberra Sprint Coach, January 22, 2024February 7, 2024 For Marijke, the thought of actually running is quite some time away. This is because Marijke has suffered a labral tear. This is where a tear in the cartilage on her left hip socket has created a lack of mobility particularly movement and joint impingement. The resulting pain can be overwhelming and there is no natural cure for this injury. Marijke’s only options is surgery or learning to deal with the injury in the short to medium term. As a result, Marijke cannot run at all at present. This has not stopped Marijke from training though. Three days a week she is in the gym, doing hip flexor, glute, compound, and other mobility exercises. Marijke is putting 4-5 hours of sprint recovery related training per week including group sessions with the FAST Running Squad and one-one-one sessions with Canberra Sprint Coach, Steve Dodt. Marijke’s training plan is very much a medium to longer term, as she aims for a Masters title in the multi event competition, Heptathlon in 2025. So while running isn’t on the program at this time, all her sessions have a running focus. Along with the above, Marijke is also doing active recovery including swimming, riding, dynamic stretching and soft tissue therapy. The structured approach to training is working out for the first time Mum. who also works full time as a Statistician. She is an active member of FAST Females and enjoys mentoring the younger girls in the squad. Marijke knows what she needs to do to be successful and return to full training in the next 3-6 months. With her existing work ethic is anything to go by, she will be lacing up her spikes again really soon.
