Last night, FAST Running stepped onto a different field.
Working with the West Canberra Wanderers FC National Premier League (NPLB) U14–U16 squads, we delivered a dedicated speed session ahead of their upcoming season.
Nearly 30 players. Two squads. One focus:
Speed that transfers to the game.
More Than Just Running Fast
In football, speed is often misunderstood.
It’s not just about how fast a player can run in a straight line.
It’s about:
- How quickly they react
- How efficiently they accelerate
- How powerfully they move into space
- How well they control their body under pressure
The session was built around these principles.
Using a structured, fartlek-style approach, players moved through a series of short, engaging efforts combining:
- Technique
- Acceleration
- Power
- Reaction
All within a one-hour session designed to keep intensity high and learning constant.
Speed Creates Opportunity
The impact of speed in football goes beyond the stopwatch.
Faster players:
- Get to the ball first
- Win more contests
- Create separation from opponents
- Have more time on the ball
And with more time comes better decision-making.
Speed doesn’t just change moments.
It changes outcomes.
Coaching Transfer, Not Just Output
The session was not about exhausting players.
It was about improving how they move.
Simple cues. Clear intent. Immediate application.
Players were not just running.
They were learning:
- How to project forward in their first steps
- How to strike the ground effectively
- How to transition quickly from reaction to movement
These are transferable skills — not just for athletics, but for any sport where speed matters.
Sought Out, Not Pushed
This session came about because the Wanderers sought out FAST Running.
They recognised the value of specialist speed coaching and its role in player development.
Following the session, the feedback was clear.
They’ve asked us back.
A Growing Opportunity
This is an area FAST Running is continuing to develop.
Working with athletes from different sports brings new challenges — and new opportunities to apply speed in different contexts.
Football, rugby, and other field sports all demand the same underlying qualities:
- Acceleration
- Efficiency
- Reaction
- Control
The principles remain the same.
The application evolves.
Athlete First, Always
Whether on the track or on the field, the approach does not change.
Develop the athlete.
Improve how they move.
Build skills that last.
Because speed is not just something you train.
It’s something you teach.
At FAST Running, performance is not limited to one sport.
It’s built through movement, applied wherever it matters most.
