Building a multi-sport athlete through Speed

FAST Running - Chase Tiffen

At just sixteen, Chase Tiffen is already forging a reputation as one of Canberra’s most versatile and committed young athletes. Balancing Rugby (St Edmund’s College)OzTag (ACT Cougars)Rugby League (Woden Valley Rams) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Chave De Ouro), Chase represents the modern multisport competitor — powerful, adaptable, and always looking for ways to refine his craft.

In 2025, Chase joined FAST for Sport, seeking a performance edge that would transfer across every code he plays. Under the combined guidance of Coach Matt van der Lugt and Head Performance Coach Steve Dodt, Chase has been immersed in a targeted speed and acceleration program designed specifically for athletes outside of track & field.

The transformation has been immediate.

Through structured acceleration mechanics, resisted and assisted speed work, and improved movement efficiency, Chase has begun developing the two attributes that matter most across all field and combat sports:

1. Explosive first-step acceleration

2. Sustainable top-end speed under pressure

These qualities are now showing on the field and the mat — sharper line breaks in Rugby, more dangerous support runs in OzTag, increased agility and power in Rugby League, and improved footwork and reaction timing in Jiu Jitsu.

What makes Chase stand out is not just his work ethic, but his willingness to learn. Every session is an opportunity to absorb, refine, and apply. His relationship with his coaches reflects this, with Matt and Steve working closely to ensure his program supports the demands of each sport while keeping him healthy, balanced, and progressing.

FAST Running is proud to support Chase as he continues to grow as a multisport athlete. His journey exemplifies what the FAST for Sport program is all about — taking athletes from any background, any code, and giving them the physical tools to excel.

Chase is proof that
when you build speed, you build the athlete.
And his story is only just beginning.
