Fastest Way to Burn Calories?” Don’t Eat ’Em.

FAST Running - Nutrition

A FAST Running reality check for sprinters (aka not ultra-marathoners)

You’re a sprinter. Your superpower is fast, not forever. So why force yourself into a punishment workout better suited to an ultra-marathoner just to cancel out a “sometimes food”? It’s way quicker to say “nah” to convenience eating than to run for an hour to pay off a Big Mac and fries.

The FAST math (based on a ~70 kg person, per hour)

  • 🏃 Jogging (9–10 km/h): ~500–700 kcal
  • 🏊 Swimming laps (mod–vig): ~600–800 kcal
  • 🚴 Cycling (mod ~20 km/h): ~500–700 kcal
  • ⚡ FAST-style sprint session: ~600–900 kcal (+ afterburn… nice, but not magic)

Meanwhile, the “convenience combo” bill

  • 🍔 Big Mac + med fries + Coke: ~1,100 kcal
  • 🍔 Whopper + med fries + Coke: ~1,200–1,300 kcal
  • 🍗 Zinger Box: ~1,300–1,600 kcal
  • 🌯 Loaded burrito: ~1,000–1,200 kcal
  • 🥤 Thickshake (large): ~800–1,000 kcal
  • 🍨 McFlurry: ~500–600 kcal
  • 🍕 Domino’s large pizza (whole): ~2,000–2,400 kcal (that’s… a training camp)

Translation

That one fast-food meal (often 1,000–1,500 kcal) = 1.5–2 hours jogging1.5 hours of laps2–3 hours cycling, or 1–2 sprint sessions.
Why spend your speed paying off snacks?

Sprinter Logic 🤝 Common Sense

  • Speed is precious. Use your sessions to get faster, not to repay a thickshake loan.
  • Fuel ≠ filler. Food is performance gear, not just “stuff I found at a drive-thru”.
  • Say no, win time. One fast “no thanks” frees up hours for recovery, study, mates, sleep… and PBs.

Say YES to smarter eating (without being boring)

  • Default fuel: protein + plants + smart carbs (wraps, rice, potatoes) + water.
  • Snack upgrades: yogurt + fruit, tuna & crackers, smoothies (milk + fruit + oats).
  • Game-day hacks: bring a wrap/roll, nuts, banana, and a bottle. If you pack it, you’ll eat it.
  • Cravings plan: 10-minute rule. If you still want it after 10 minutes (and training’s done), portion it, enjoy it, move on.

Say “not today” to…

  • The “I earned it” combo meal after a light session.
  • Liquid sugar disguised as a drink. (It’s just sprint-tax.)
  • The whole pizza. (Share or save slices for tomorrow.)

TL;DR for FAST teens

Want to run faster, feel lighter, and recover quicker?
Spend your speed on PBs, not on burning off chips. Feel better, fuel smarter, perform at your best. ⚡

Footnote: All numbers are estimates for ~70 kg athletes. Your burn varies with effort, genetics, and session design (sprints get a cheeky afterburn). Occasional treats are fine—strategy > guilt.
